School Snapshot

Animas High School is a small, tuition free, public charter school that offers a rigorous, personalized, college preparatory curriculum. Its inclusive school culture welcomes students socially and challenges them academically.

AHS values:

· Rigorous academics, where all students are prepared for college success.
· A culture of excellence, where students are held to high expectations.
· Strong faculty-student relationships, where students are well known.
· Engaging education, where students discover the relevance of their learning.

Based on the successful High Tech High in California, Animas delivers its curriculum through direct instruction and through projects that give students the opportunity to apply their learning in relevant, real-world ways. An expectation to produce quality work, articulate ideas, and focus on education permeates Animas.

In 2011, Animas High was named a John Irwin School of Excellence by the Colorado Department of Education, recognizing AHS in the top 8% of Colorado public schools. In 2013, AHS received the state’s top ranking: Performance with Distinction. Animas High School graduated its first class of seniors in May 2013. 100% of Animas seniors that applied to college were accepted.

Acknowledging the unique combination of academic rigor and cultural excellence, several families have moved to Durango primarily to allow their teens to attend Animas High School.

Animas High School is located in Twin Buttes community. (The entrance is 1.7 miles west of the Doubletree Hotel on Hwy 160, just past the Giant Gas Station.)

Distinguishing Characteristics:

· College prep curriculum that challenges and supports each student.
· Small school that creates strong student-teacher connections.
· Meaningful, engaging, relevant education.
