Final Three Weeks of the School Year: Important Dates and Details

Dear Osprey Students and Families,

The next three weeks are chock full of special events and quirky schedules and we want to be sure you have all the information you need to help us all wrap up the 2018-19 school year gracefully.

We hope you will join us for the final Osprey Parent Coffee tomorrow morning, 8:15-9:15. We’ve decided to cancel the Potluck in the Park scheduled for Friday evening, due to predictions of rain. Stay tuned, as we’ll organize a family picnic over the summer!

Please read carefully, and send follow up questions my way.

May 13-17: Final Week of Regular Classes

Next week, juniors return from LINK Internships for the final week of regularly scheduled classes.

  • Junior Welcome Back from LINK Breakfast on Monday, May 13 from 8:30-9:30 in the Commons. Parents–please sign up here to help with this event. We are seeking volunteers to help provide pancake batter, toppings, drinks, utensils and paperware and to flip some pancakes!
  • We are doing a full All School Exhibition Run Through on Wednesday, May 15 in the morning from 9:00 to 12:00. Students will meet in Advisory at 8:25. We will have regular release at 3:25 after the final XBlock of the year.
  • All School Exhibition is Thursday, May 16, 4:00 to 7:00 at AHS. Professional dress is required for all students.

May 20-24: TPOL Prep/Graduation Week

The week after next, students will be preparing for TPOLs and seniors will be in full graduation swing:

  • 9th through 11th graders will be engaged in Transitional Presentation of Learning (TPOL) preparation, working in grade-level teams, Monday through Thursday during regular school hours, 8:25 to 3:25.
  • During TPOL prep, teachers will present information about elective offerings for 2019-20 as outlined in the 2019-20 Course Catalog and students will submit their course requests for next year. We hope to have student schedules for next year created by the end of June. Please review elective choices together as a family. Students have reviewed transcripts and graduation requirements in Advisory to help inform their decisions.
  • Senior Celebration is Tuesday, May 21 from 5:00 to 7:30 at the Powerhouse Science Center. All are welcome to attend this event, where we acknowledge the support of the community in the AHS Class of 2019’s high school journey and celebrate our seniors’ growth and accomplishments. Seniors will present their Senior Project action projects at this event, showing how they have brought their research to life. There will be light refreshments. We will unveil the Senior Celebration Booklet at this event, and seniors will receive cap and gowns and graduation tickets.
  • Seniors will have individually scheduled Senior Exit Interviews on Wednesday or Thursday.
  • We will have LINK Internship Panels, where 11th graders will present to 9th and 10th graders, and the Final All School Meeting (including Senior Impersonations) on Thursday, May 23.
  • Senior Supper is Thursday, May 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 at AHS.  This event is just for seniors and staff, and is our final chance to appreciate the soon-to-be graduates before their big day. Junior parents–stay tuned for a sign up to help with Senior Supper!  We will need folks setting up, preparing food, serving food, donating items, cleaning up, etc. to help create this special event for our seniors.
  • Graduation Rehearsal is Friday, May 24 from 8:30 to 10:30 at the Community Concert Hall. This is a full dress rehearsal and we will take the class photo at this time.
  • Advisory Olympics are Friday, May 24 from 8:25 to 12:30 off campus with early release (we are hoping at Fort Lewis College, but awaiting confirmation). This end-of-year tradition engages advisory groups in friendly, fun competition (think dance-offs, tug-of-war, egg toss, etc.), with each group decked out in themed costumes.  Our expectation is that all 9th through 11th grade students will participate in Advisory Olympics unless we receive a call from a parent or guardian excusing the student due to illness.  We will have early release at 12:30 and AHS will NOT provide transportation to/from Advisory Olympics. Students must arrange their own transportation; there will be NO Hub Bus and AHS campus will be closed on Friday.  There will be NO catered lunch available and students should bring a sack lunch, sunscreen and water.
  • AHS Graduation is on Friday, May 24, from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Community Concert Hal There will be general admission seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please plan to arrive and be seated no later than 3:45 if you have tickets.  We will release ticketed seats at that time to general admission guests.

The Hub Bus from DHS to AHS WILL run and we WILL offer catered lunch May 20 through 23. The Bus will NOT run and we will NOT offer catered lunch on Friday May 24.

May 28 through 31: TPOL Week

All 9th through 11th grade students will complete Transitional Presentations of Learnings.  As with POLs in December, TPOLs are individually scheduled; student schedules will vary this week depending upon when they are completing and paneling for TPOLs. There is no school on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 and no TPOLs will be scheduled for that date. Successful completion of TPOL is required to transition to the next grade level; it is not unusual to be asked to refine and redo a TPOL and students need to be prepared to return another day if they do not pass the first time. Professional dress is required for TPOLs.

  • Freshmen will individually present to a panel of faculty and peers; parents are welcome to attend with an invitation from their student. Ninth grade students will complete their TPOLs on Tuesday, May 28 and Wednesday, May 29.  Any student not reaching presentation expectations will be asked to refine and make up the presentation on Thursday, May 30. Here is the schedule for the students in Jessica’s Humanities Class and here is the schedule for students in Stephen’s Humanities classes.  If you foresee any issues with these dates and or times please reach out to mcknight@animashighschool.com to reschedule as soon as possible.
  • Sophomores will be demonstrating the culmination of their skills by participating in Socratic Seminars, where they and a group of their peers dig into questions of class culture and community. In these seminars, they will be required to draw on two texts that we will read and analyze during TPOL prep and combine that textual evidence with their own experiences from throughout the year. These will assessed by the 10th grade teaching team. Students will be scheduled for one time slot of 1.5 hours on either Tuesday, May 28 or Wednesday, May 29; makeups will be on Thursday, May 30. The sophomore teaching team will share the TPOL schedule with sophomore families soon. Students do not need to be here for any other times and families are welcome to observe sophomore TPOLs
  • Juniors will do individual presentations about their LINK Internships and consider next steps in their career and college paths for a panel of their peers and teachers for TPOLs; parents and LINK mentors are welcome and encouraged to attend. Here is the schedule for junior TPOLs.

The last day of school is Friday, May 31, though some students will finish before then if they successfully complete their TPOL and paneling responsibilities earlier in the week. The Staff Appreciation Lunch is on Friday, May 31; stay tuned for a signup to help provide food for our hard-working teachers.

There WILL be a Hub Bus from DHS to AHS on May 28, 29 and 30 but NO Hub Bus on Friday May 31. There will be NO catered lunch during TPOL week.

I recognize that the end of the school year can be a bit of a whirlwind and there are many details to track.  As always, we invite you to reach out with any questions or concerns. Thank you for all you do at home to support your student as we all work toward finishing the year gracefully!

Cheers,

Libby
