Student Support and Belonging

At AHS, we believe that student belonging and wellbeing is a critical foundation for learning. We have developed programs and practices to support students in ways that cultivate physical, mental, social and academic health for all.

  • We are a small, caring and inclusive school that values authentic relationships and student voice. Students are well known and are valued for who they are as full human beings. It is respectful here to call adults by their first names. Our Dean of Students and Culture coordinates programs and practices that foster a culture of excellence and a sense of belonging through positive shared experiences for all students and staff.
  • Our Dean of Wellness is a licensed social worker who connects students and families with community resources, social/emotional support, counseling services and evidence-based health education.
  • Our team of special education teachers and academic coaches in the Inclusion Department supports diverse learners through a practice of Inclusion, serving a wide range of student needs within a general education classroom setting. We work to ensure students with educational plans are successful in pursuing their academic and life goals.
  • Through our physical education program, XBlocks, we support student wellbeing and positive school culture. Once a week in the afternoon, students and faculty exercise together at a variety of locations in our community, including trails, gyms and studios. Students choose new XBlock classes each quarter, giving them a chance to test out several sports and activities.
  • Students participate in Clubs once a week in the afternoon, connecting with others who share similar interests.
  • Our School Nurse provides support to students and families around health and medical needs, coordinating communication with faculty about health care plans and medications as needed to ensure students receive the care and support they need.
